Interview Prep: Know Yourself

We know all too well that the interview process can be an exciting, yet anxiety-ridden time for a job seeker. However, dealing with that anxiety can sometimes be troublesome if you jump down the internet rabbit hole. In doing so you’ll most likely find untold amounts of advice and tips all claiming to ease your mind and help you land that ever-elusive dream job. What you may not know is that you already possess the answers you seek and once you master the art of knowing yourself, you will inevitably succeed.

The most important part of interview preparation is to know yourself. Be honest with yourself about what it is you are looking for both personally and professionally. Use these three questions to help feel more comfortable with yourself and confident in the direction you’re heading. The next time you’re preparing for an interview, keep your answers close in your heart and in your head to feel confident in your abilities and impress any hiring manager.

  • What is your direction in life?

How can an employer feel comfortable offering you a position and committing to training and a future with his/her company if you are unsure of your life path? Be confident in knowing where you’ve been and where you want to go so they can feel comfortable committing to you.

  • What are your passions?

According to the American Psychological Association, there is a direct link between those who find passion in their personal lives and those who find passion in their work. A passionate employee will bring more to the table on many levels than one who merely goes through the motions of life (and work!).

  • How can this company help you better yourself?

The answer to this question will show any hiring manager not only that you are looking to grow professionally and personally, it also shows that you’ve done your research on a company and are excited to become a part of the culture.
